LEARN WELL.
ENJOY
LEARNING.
Live, one-to-one piano and keyboard lessons for adults and children, taught online from your own instrument — with experience, encouragement and personality. Based in Derby, welcoming learners wherever they are.
Whether you've always wanted to play, you're coming back to it, or you're looking for lessons for your child, you're very welcome here.
YOUR FIRST LESSON IS ON ME.

A whole lot of possibility.01 / THE START

EXPERIENCE. WITH PERSONALITY.
Hello, I'm Ed.
I've been teaching piano for more than 40 years, and one thing that experience has taught me is that people don't all learn in the same way.
Something that makes perfect sense to one pupil may leave another completely puzzled. That's fine. We find another way.
My job isn't simply to tell you what notes to play. It's to help you understand what you're doing, develop the skills to do it well — and enjoy becoming able to do something you couldn't do before.

WHAT PUPILS AND PARENTS SAY
“I've been having piano lessons with Ed for about 3 months now. What an amazing teacher he is, every lesson is well structured and challenging and set at a pace that suits me perfectly.”
“My son has had Ed teaching him now for well over a year. He has always been very professional and courteous.”
WHERE ARE YOU STARTING FROM?
ADULTS & RETURNING PLAYERS
Always wanted
to play?
Maybe you've been thinking about learning piano for years.
Perhaps you've simply wondered:
Could I actually learn to play?
YES.
You don't need previous experience.
You don't need to read music.
You don't need to take exams.
And you certainly haven't left it too late.
We'll start exactly where you are and build from there.
You just need to want to play.

However long it's been, let's find your way back to the piano or keyboard.
Weekday daytime lessons can fit beautifully around life — whether you're retired or semi-retired, work from home, work shifts, or simply prefer learning during the day.
PIANO & KEYBOARD FOR CHILDREN
Learning they
can look
forward to.
Children make their best progress when they feel comfortable enough to ask questions, make mistakes and have another go.
Lessons combine proper musical foundations with encouragement, patience and plenty of interaction.
We'll work on reading music, rhythm, technique and musicianship — on piano or keyboard — but there should also be room for curiosity, laughter and that wonderful feeling when something suddenly clicks.

With so many models, prices and specifications to choose from, it's easy to spend more than you need — or buy something that isn't right for you.
Ed can offer impartial, practical advice about what to look for, what you actually need and where your money is best spent.
A quick conversation could save you a lot of money.

The location changes.
The standard doesn't.
Learning online doesn't mean accepting a lesser lesson.
We meet live through Google Meet. I listen to you play, work through the music with you, explain technique and theory, answer questions and give you the same individual attention and guidance you would expect from any Derby Piano Academy lesson.

THE WAY WE LEARN
Learning seriously doesn't
mean being serious
all the time.
You can laugh during a lesson and still learn good technique.
You can play music you enjoy and still develop rhythm, notation and musicianship.
You can make genuine progress without having an examination waiting at the end of it.
Learn well.
Enjoy learning.
THE BEST BIT?
There's a particular feeling when you realise…
I CAN
ACTUALLY
PLAY THIS.
It might be a whole piece. It might only be a few bars that seemed impossible last week.
But suddenly your fingers know where they're going and what you're hearing sounds like music.
That's progress.
No exam required. No certificate necessary.
Sometimes being able to sit down and play is reward enough.
LET'S FIND OUT WHAT YOU CAN DO.
