ADULT PIANO & KEYBOARD LESSONS · DERBY & ONLINE

Always wanted
to play?

Perhaps you've thought about learning for years. Perhaps you played when you were younger and would love to start again. Or perhaps you've simply wondered whether you could do it.

You can.

Adult piano and keyboard lessons in Derby and online aren't about turning you into a music scholar. They're about helping you learn properly, play with confidence and discover just how satisfying making music for yourself can be.

You don't need previous experience. You don't need to read music. And you certainly don't need an exam waiting at the end of it.

You just need to want to play.

YOUR FIRST LESSON IS ON ME.

LEARNING AS AN ADULT

Am I too old
to learn?

Adults can begin learning piano or keyboard at many stages of life. Starting later doesn't make you an unsuitable beginner. It simply means we're starting with the person you are now.

You bring patience, life experience and your own musical tastes. Often, you also have a clearer reason for learning: a song you've always loved, a wish to play for yourself, or the pleasure of doing something entirely different.

There isn't a deadline for getting good at this. Your pace will depend on your starting point, the time you can give it and what you're working towards. We'll take it a step at a time.

You haven't left it too late.

COMPLETE BEGINNERS

Never played
a note?
Good place
to start.

You don't need to read musical notation or understand musical terminology before your first piano or keyboard lesson. That's something we learn together, rather than an entrance requirement.

We start with getting comfortable at the instrument: finding your way around the keys, noticing how they sound and learning how to use your hands without unnecessary tension. Simple music gives us a practical way to explore rhythm, coordination and technique.

Reading music and musical understanding develop alongside playing. A new symbol means much more when you've heard it, played it and understood what it asks you to do.

With more than 40 years of teaching experience, Ed knows that an explanation won't work equally well for everyone. If something doesn't make sense, we find another way.

RETURNING TO PIANO OR KEYBOARD

Your piano playing hasn't disappeared.
It might be a little dusty.
Let's find it again.

If you haven't played for years — or decades — your first lesson doesn't need to be a performance of your former self.

We'll find out what feels familiar, what needs refreshing and what you'd like to play now. Reading music may come back more easily than you expect; coordination or confidence may need a little more time. There's no requirement to arrive at your previous standard.

Old habits can be revisited, gaps can be filled and musical interests can change. We build from where you are today.

PROPER FOUNDATIONS. MORE POSSIBILITIES.

What will I actually learn?

Adult piano and keyboard lessons connect musical skills to the music you're playing. We work on the things that help you play more comfortably, understand what you hear and become less dependent on someone telling you every next note.

Technique & coordination
How you sit, move and use your fingers affects how playing feels and sounds. We'll develop comfortable movement and help your hands work together, so a difficult passage becomes something you can approach sensibly.
Reading musical notation
Reading music helps you explore pieces independently. We connect notes and other markings to the keyboard and to sound, building understanding through music you can actually play.
Rhythm & timing
Notes need a sense of pulse and shape. We'll work on keeping time, recognising rhythmic patterns and fitting your hands together, so the music flows rather than simply happens.
Scales, chords & harmony
Where they're useful, scales and chords help you recognise patterns, find your way around the keyboard and understand how music fits together. They have a purpose beyond being exercises.
Listening & interpretation
Listening to your own playing helps you notice balance, phrasing and expression. Musical interpretation is about making choices that bring a piece to life, rather than playing every note in exactly the same way.
Practical theory & independence
Music theory is useful when it explains what you're doing. We'll connect it to real pieces and develop ways to practise, solve problems and build confidence playing on your own.

The point isn't simply to know more about music.
It's to be able to do more with it.

YOUR MUSIC. GOOD MUSICAL HABITS.

Music you actually
want to play.

Learning properly doesn't mean everyone has to follow the same repertoire or examination pathway. Your musical interests give us a useful place to begin.

Tell Ed what you enjoy listening to and what you'd love to play. Some pieces will suit your present skills; others may be something to work towards, or need an appropriate arrangement.

Ed will also introduce music that develops useful skills and opens up new possibilities. Enjoyment and good technique, notation, rhythm and musicianship can develop together.

Learn well. Enjoy learning.

PROGRESS WITHOUT PRESSURE

Do I have to
take exams?

No.

You can learn properly, make progress and enjoy playing without taking a piano examination. Being able to sit down and make music is a perfectly good reason to learn.

ABRSM examinations can be an option if you'd enjoy having that particular goal. They aren't compulsory, and they don't define whether your learning is worthwhile.

WEEKDAY DAYTIME LESSONS IN DERBY

Your piano lesson doesn't have to wait until the evening.

A little space in your day.
Something just for you.

Weekday daytime piano and keyboard lessons can work particularly well if you're retired or semi-retired, work from home, work shifts, or simply find daytime learning more convenient.

You might prefer to learn while you feel fresh, or enjoy making music part of your daytime routine. It's worth talking to Ed about what could fit around your life.

Ask about daytime lessons when you get in touch. We'll discuss current availability rather than promise a time before we've spoken.

Most Derby Piano Academy lessons now take place live online. You learn at your own piano or keyboard, with Ed teaching you individually through Google Meet.

Technique, reading, rhythm, theory, musicianship and the music itself are all part of the lesson. Whether you're a complete beginner or returning to the piano after years away, online tuition is a proper DPA lesson — taught live, personally and at your pace.

BEFORE YOU BUY

No instrument yet?
Don't rush.

You don't need to choose a piano or digital keyboard on your own before making contact. Speak to Ed first.

He can offer practical, impartial guidance about suitable instruments, what you actually need and how to avoid unnecessary expense. An instrument for practising will matter as you learn; an expensive mistake doesn't need to be part of the process.

A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS

Before you
take the
first step.

Am I too old to learn piano?

Adults can begin learning at many stages of life. We start with your current experience and work at a pace that makes sense for you. There isn't an age at which you have to stop being a beginner.

Do I need to read music before I start?

No. Learning to read musical notation is part of lessons, alongside rhythm, technique and playing. You don't need to learn it separately before your first lesson.

Do I need a piano before my first lesson?

Speak to Ed before buying anything. Tell him what you have, if anything. DPA's principal offering is live, one-to-one online tuition for pupils in Derby and beyond. He can explain what you'll need to get started and practise at home.

Can I learn keyboard instead of piano?

Yes. Derby Piano Academy offers adult keyboard lessons as well as piano lessons. Tell Ed which instrument interests you, and ask for advice if you're unsure which would suit you.

Do I have to take piano exams?

No. ABRSM examinations are an option for pupils who want that goal. You can develop technique, musicianship and confidence without taking exams.

Can I have piano lessons online?

Yes. Live online piano and keyboard lessons take place through Google Meet, with Ed listening to your playing, explaining, answering questions and giving individual feedback.

You've thought about it long enough.
