LIVE ONLINE PIANO & KEYBOARD LESSONS

Different location.
Same teacher.
Same quality of tuition.

Learning piano online doesn't mean accepting a lesser lesson.

We meet live through Google Meet. I listen to you play, work through the music with you, explain technique and theory, answer questions and give you the same individual attention and guidance you would expect from any Derby Piano Academy lesson.

The location changes. The standard doesn't.

A PIANO LESSON. IN DIFFERENT PLACES.

Can you really
learn piano online?

Yes.

An individual piano lesson involves listening, watching, explaining, demonstrating concepts, asking questions, giving feedback and working through music. Those teaching interactions can take place live online.

Ed listens to what you play, helps you understand a difficulty and works with you on what to try next. You can ask a question, repeat a passage or slow things down together.

The setting is different from having your teacher beside you. The teaching standards, individual attention and musical objectives remain the same: helping you learn properly and enjoy becoming able to play.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS IN AN ONLINE LESSON?

We listen. We work it out.
We have another go.

A live online piano or keyboard lesson follows what you need to learn, rather than a rigid checklist. Ed hears your playing and responds to the music, the questions and the difficulties in front of you.

Working through real music

You might play a piece you've been practising, then work through a passage that isn't quite coming together. We can look at rhythm and timing, reading the notation, coordination or how a movement feels at the keyboard.

Sometimes the useful next step is a slower attempt, a smaller section or a different explanation. Listening to the result helps us decide what is improving and what still needs attention.

Understanding what to do next

Practical music theory, scales, chords and musical patterns can help explain the piece where useful. Interpretation and expression matter too: not just which notes to play, but how to make them sound like music.

You can ask questions throughout. We also discuss what to work on between lessons, so your practice has a purpose rather than becoming another run through the same mistakes.

You're not watching a piano lesson.
You're having one.

LIVE, INDIVIDUAL TUITION

A conversation.
Not a recording.

A prerecorded online course can't hear what you've just played. In a live lesson, Ed can — and you can ask a question immediately, play something again or stop him when an explanation hasn't made sense.

More than 40 years of teaching has taught Ed that pupils don't all understand the same explanation or need the same pace. Live individual tuition gives us room to respond to how you're actually learning.

If one explanation doesn't make sense, we find another way.

The lesson is about you and your music, rather than keeping up with a generic programme.

WHAT DO I NEED?

A few simple
things.

  • A piano or suitable digital keyboard

You need an instrument to play during the lesson and practise on between lessons. If you're unsure what to buy, speak to Ed before spending money.

  • A laptop or tablet suitable for Google Meet

This is how we meet live. Specialist cameras, microphones or studio equipment aren't requirements.

  • A reasonably stable internet connection

We need to be able to hear, see and speak to each other during the lesson.

  • A useful view of you and the keyboard

Position the device so Ed can see enough of your posture, hands and keyboard to teach effectively. He can help you understand where to put it.

You don't have to work out the setup on your own. Ed can help a new pupil understand how to position the device and get ready for the first lesson.

No studio. No complicated setup.
Just somewhere comfortable to play.

GOOGLE MEET PIANO LESSONS

Meet online.
Focus on music.

Lessons take place live using Google Meet. If video calls are unfamiliar, Ed can help you get ready before your first lesson and explain what you need to do.

Once we're connected and the device is positioned usefully, the focus is your playing. The software is simply how we meet; it doesn't need to become the subject of the lesson.

BEGINNER ONLINE PIANO & KEYBOARD LESSONS

Never played before?
Online is still a perfectly
good place to start.

Complete beginners don't need to read music or understand musical terminology before their first online lesson. Those things can develop gradually as you learn to play.

We begin with finding your way around the keyboard, listening, simple rhythms and comfortable technique. Notation and musical understanding become useful because they're connected to music you're actually making.

You can ask about a new idea as soon as it feels unfamiliar. There isn't a test you need to pass before you can begin.

RETURNING TO PIANO OR KEYBOARD

Your instrument
is still there.
Let's play it again.

If you own a piano or keyboard but haven't played for years, online tuition can make returning to it a convenient part of life at home.

We don't assume you remember everything you once knew, or expect you to perform at your previous standard. Ed helps you find what feels familiar, refresh what needs work and explore the music you'd like to play now.

Your piano playing hasn't disappeared. It might be a little dusty. We can take our time finding it again.

ONLINE LESSONS FOR CHILDREN

Encouragement.
Questions.
Proper foundations.

Online piano and keyboard lessons can also work for children where the format suits the individual pupil and their circumstances. It isn't a universal answer for every child.

The principles remain the same: an encouraging lesson, proper musical foundations, listening, feedback, questions and enjoyment. Speak to Ed about your child and the setup at home so you can discuss whether online learning is appropriate.

OBSERVATION, EXPLANATION & FEEDBACK

Can you teach technique
through a screen?

With the device positioned appropriately, Ed can observe posture, movement, hand position, coordination and what is happening at the keyboard. He can identify an issue, explain a change and ask you to try the passage again.

The camera view isn't physically identical to standing beside a pupil. What it shows matters, so we may adjust the position or look more closely at a particular movement.

Technique develops through observation, clear communication, listening and feedback. You can describe how something feels as well as show how you're playing, helping Ed understand what needs attention.

THEORY, NOTATION & MUSIC

More than
pressing the
right keys.

Online piano tuition isn't limited to watching your fingers. Reading music, rhythm, practical theory, scales, chords, musical structure and interpretation can all form part of lessons where useful.

These skills help you recognise patterns, understand what the notation asks for and make musical choices. We connect an idea to what you hear and play, so it has a purpose beyond being another fact to remember.

The point isn't simply to know more about music.
It's to be able to do more with it.

BUILT AROUND REAL LIFE

Learn from
your own piano.

Most Derby Piano Academy lessons now take place live online.

You learn at your own piano or keyboard, with Ed teaching you live through Google Meet. There is no travelling to a lesson and no unfamiliar instrument to get used to. You simply sit down at the instrument you practise on every day and your lesson begins.

Online tuition works for complete beginners, returning players and more experienced pupils. Technique, reading, rhythm, theory, musicianship and the music itself are all part of the lesson.

Your piano. Your home. A proper lesson with Ed.

REAL QUESTIONS ABOUT ONLINE LESSONS

Before we
meet online.

Can you really learn piano online?

Yes. Live individual tuition includes listening to your playing, explaining, answering questions and giving feedback. The setting changes, while the teaching standards and musical objectives remain.

Are online piano lessons live?

Yes. You meet with Ed through Google Meet. Lessons respond to your playing and questions; they aren't prerecorded courses.

What equipment do I need for an online piano lesson?

A piano or suitable digital keyboard, a laptop or tablet suitable for Google Meet, a reasonably stable internet connection and a position that lets Ed see enough of you and the keyboard. He can help with positioning.

Do I need to read music before I start?

No. Reading musical notation can develop during lessons, alongside rhythm, technique and playing. You don't need to learn it separately beforehand.

Can complete beginners learn piano online?

Yes. Beginner online piano and keyboard lessons introduce the instrument, coordination, notation and musical understanding gradually through playing.

Can children have online piano lessons?

Yes, where the format suits the individual child and circumstances. Speak to Ed about your child's experience and the setup at home before deciding.

Can piano technique be taught online?

With an appropriate view, Ed can observe posture, movement, hands and coordination, explain adjustments and give feedback as you try again. The view is different from teaching beside a pupil, so useful device positioning matters.

What happens if I'm not confident using Google Meet?

Tell Ed before your first lesson. He can help you understand how to get ready and position your device, so the lesson can focus on music.
